NAIROBI — Opposition leader Raila Odinga wants top security chiefs to resign, accusing them of failing to protect Kenyans in the wake of the Mandera attack that killed 28 people.Odinga who spoke at the Chiromo mortuary where he went to console affected family members accused the government of casually handling security matters, leading to increased attacks.

He stated that the killing of 100 Al Shabaab militants after an attack in the country is not enough, and wants more measures to guarantee internal security.

In the meantime, a group of civil society organisations was planning a major protest in Nairobi over the deteriorating security in the country. Several leaders, including Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale have stated that they will join the protests to demand accountability from the government.

The activists are demanding the resignation or sacking of interior cabinet secretary Joseph Ole Lenku and police chief David Kimaiyo, accusing them of failing to protect Kenyans.

The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has already told its members not to return to Northern Kenya following the killings.

KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion said that those still remaining there and are not native to the area should leave with immediate effect while those who have left should not return when schools reopen.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Union has joined their colleagues in the teaching profession in urging all its members to vacate North Eastern region over insecurity.

National secretary-general Abidan Mwachi said that those working in  Garissa, Mandera and Wajir must leave immediately and relocate to their home counties.

He pointed out that the health workers can resume work once the government puts in place proper measures to guarantee their security.

On Saturday, Al-Shabaab militants hijacked a Nairobi-bound bus and executed 28 people, mainly teachers and health workers, in a chilling dawn attack that occurred in Mandera. — CapitalFM.
