THE MDC-T faction led by Mr Nelson Chamisa will field its candidates in the forthcoming elections under the MDC Alliance name while the rival faction led by Dr Thokozani Khupe will stick with MDC-T.

The two factions are locked in a court battle over the use of the party’s name following an acrimonious fall out over the succession of the late founding MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai.

Deputy President of the Dr Khupe led faction, Mr Obert Gutu said they were going under the name MDC-T but will adopt new party symbols.

“We are fielding our candidates under the name MDC-T under Dr Khupe and I’m sure you have already seen our election symbol. It’s got an open palm and face of a young child in between raising the right hand,” said Mr Gutu.

He said their new symbol had already been accepted by Zec.

“Legally, we are perfectly in good standing in terms of the election symbol, there is a variation. We are absolutely on the right side of the law. There is nothing to stop us from doing that and indeed Zec has since accepted our party symbol,” said Mr Gutu.

PDP leader Mr Tendai Biti, whose party is a member of the coalition, said as a grouping of seven parties they would be using the name MDC Alliance for this election.

“The MDC Alliance is an organisation consisting of seven different political parties and as such we are contesting the elections as an alliance,” said Mr Biti.

The MDC-T factions are fighting over the use of the name and party symbols and last month, the Supreme Court referred the matter to the High Court on an urgent basis but it is yet to be set down.

Meanwhile, all is set for the nomination court, which sits today, with the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) ready to receive nomination papers from aspiring candidates from 10AM to 4PM.

Zec officials yesterday said they had received all the equipment that is necessary for the efficient and effective running of the nomination courts.

Elections officer for Bulawayo province Mr Innocent Ncube said aspiring National Assembly candidates will submit their papers at Tredgold while those aspiring to contest in the local authority will submit their papers at the Bulawayo City Council chambers.

“We’re ready for the nomination court and we still encourage aspiring candidates to lodge their nomination papers on time to avoid the last minute rush.

“Aspiring candidates for the local authority will go to the City Hall while the National Assembly candidates will go to Court 5 at Tredgold,” said Mr Ncube.

Matabeleland North provincial elections officer Mr Mark Ndlovu said National Assembly candidates from the province will submit their papers at West Commonage Court in Bulawayo while nine courts have been set up for the local authority candidates.

“We’re ready for the nomination court with everything in place. We have set the West Commonage Courts in Bulawayo for National Assembly aspiring candidates.

“For the local authority aspiring candidates we have nine courts, which include three in Hwange District and one in each of the remaining six districts,” said Mr Ndlovu.

Zanu-PF national spokesperson Cde Simon Khaya Moyo said the ruling party was ready for the nomination court.

“All candidates endorsed by the Politburo are prepared to do what is expected of them and we’re happy that all is in place for Zec to receive nomination papers from all candidates. I’m certain the process will be smooth,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.—@pamelashumba1, @AuxiliaK

If this report is true per chronicle , then The Alliance has some intensive awareness campaign to embark on, seeing that the Khuphe faction uses an open palm which has been the symbol of the Main party and is likely to fool some voters. Khuphe and Gutu are gunning to at least win one or two seats, to use to insinuate at the Alliance in parly and side with ZANU on voting on motions . Chronicle and ZANU are happy that Khuphe has retained MDC T tag and hope the confusion will work, she will be paid well for her work by zanu, but lets see how street-wise zimbabweans have grown now and overcome this

True they should have started earlier. What a lot of those that want to see the confusion the technology in this day and age can disseminate information rapidly. Even to the rural people.

You are talking about 2 seats only. The Alliance has already lost in Nkayi North and South. They will lose more because of arrogance and assuming that everyone doesn’t think like them.

  • OBSERVER

I don’t see MDC T coming out with anything in this election. The name itself shows a lack of strength and bankruptcy of ideas from the party leaders. T stood for Tsvangirai who was the leader then, but every one knows that he is dead and he can’t lead beyond the grave. This will certainly cause confusion to many people which will give ZANU PF an upper hand.

Khupe is just selfish. this will confuse voters and dilute votes in favour of zanu. she doesnt have the people at heart.

    • Wellington

confused how? hanti you are able to read, you read and then chose who you want, confusion theory is just an excuse

    • S B Dube

Is Chamisa not the selfish one. Why didnt he just form his own party called MDC- Chamisa and leave MDC_T alone. Why are you so biased ? Khuphe was the congress elected VP. I am not a member of MDC ..but in the interests of democracy normal fairness and common sense. Khuphe is the rightful replacement for the departed president Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai

It’s all about ego. It’s like a child who destroys a toy so that nobody else can have it. This is how egos operate- ‘If I can’t have it then it must be destroyed.’ Khuphe was opposed to the alliance right from the beginning, to the extent that she boycotted MDC-T meetings and programmes before Tsvangirai’s death. Sadly she won’t get much- would be lucky to garner more than 2 seats. Ngingamtshayel’ihlombe. She should have drawn lessons from the 2005 split. Sizoyicel’isivuthiwe.

    • Mzwazwa

But you have been saying she has to go all along because she doesn’t have support. Which dilution are you talking about now?

  • Major Musango

Khupe ari kuedza zvebhora musango but haazive kuti zvekurara ne ZANU PF hazvibhadhare … ZANU PF inongomitisa hairoore ….. Chamisa is the real deal

    • Mzwazwa

Tshamisa has just got into a deal with Mugabe. That is being the worst traitor of all times. Mugabe and ED butchered the people of Matebeleland and Tshamisa now want to bring Mugabe back through the back door to continue tormenting the people of Matebeleland. some of us dont want anything to do with these people from the East. We have suffered enough under their rule.If they can’t vote Kuphe just because she is a Ndebele why should we vote Tshamisa or ED. Now there is devolution. We don’t need them. We have suffered for the past 38 years under the oppression of these people. Our kids are given Shona teachers and jobs as simple as security, petrol attendants, till operators are taken by people from the East while our kids are being marginalized in their own region. Enough is enough. We want a leader who cares about our region and that’s is MDC-T and Kuphe for all the Provincial councils. We can’t be ruled from Harare anymore.

  • MakhosiXamu

Another 5 years of being ruled by the Junta is just unthinkable …ooooooh bakithi so phephela phi bantu?. ED and Chiwenga basiphilisa nzima kuleli, shame.

Khupe et al., are just spoilers period. They know full well that they are not going to win the elections. Khupe had abandoned Tsvangirai in his last days and yet she wants to cling on to Tsvangirai’s name for political mileage. Gutu is just bitter and is overrated.

  • C.Note

I am afraid the Mdc T, the T party should have been scrapped because I believe there are some other people that still dont know of the Alliance but are a made aware of the T in MDC that, it is the Party they want to vote for. It wont be a shocker if the votes meant for Mdc Alliance find their into the Mdc T

    • Mboni

But how many people do read in Zim? Its the picture that will make the difference. As long as there is Chamisa’s face – thats enough for a Gogo!

  • libertyatliberty

Njabulo.libertyatliberty at gmail dot com.The so called Thokozane Khuphe faction which consists of mercenaries will suffer heavy defeat in the forthcoming elections.I do not know where they will hide.Being proud for nothing does not pay any dividends at all.Now that the quagmire issue (of name, logo),has been resolved, lets see whether anyone will support them.It does not matter which name you contest under, the main thing is the number of supporters that recognise you as right candidate. If only those feeble minded people had humbled themselves, they were going to benefit from the new Zim under president advocate Chamisa. The change of name has certainly put a dent in the ulterior motives of those mercenaries.

      • Jimmi

You are a Zanu Drone bra

  • Doris Costance Madlipipi

At last everybody is happy now. Those who love Zanu must be confortable with their party, same goes to Chamisa’s alliance and Khupe’s Mdc T (hokozani) etc. I for one as Khupe’s supporter, was always offended by those who say she should abondon her people and join chamisa for the sake of numbers at rallies. That would have deprived us who dont like him, we neither like Ed, so were we then supposed to be barred from voting. Nonsense. Nobody can claim the win yet hence the votes.

  • Zwide_001

Khuphe is nuts, why does she wanna retain the name of a dead man.

    • Doris Costance Madlipipi

Let me answer you, MDC T can stand for MDC Thokozani, what about chamisa? Or I would be MDC Tshamisa?

      • Zwide_001

why do parties have to bear any one’s surname or initials in the first place? Why can’t you/they call it MDC Transformation, why this obsession with personalities?

    • Mboni

That name has a “T” remember, and she is Thokozani. I am happy with the MDC-ALLIANCE name too!

      • takunda nigel

First step from power : MDC T to MDC A .
Next step :: MDC A to feja feja club come July 30 !

  • kay

it is fool-hardy, foolish and short sighted to not realize the underhand of zanu pf in all this. The people shall not be fooled or be disoriented and will remain focussed on the work at hand

    • Chambati

Too true. ZANU are employing every trick in the book.

  • Chikara

Let Khupe disturb MDC Alliance so she will get her reward from Zanu. Do you think a sane person can deliberately want to disturb real change like Gutu and Khupe have done. They are not themselves and are worse than Judas Iscariot. Mari yakashata.
