FIVE kickboxers will leave for South Africa today to take part in the Z9 Kickboxing Series to be held in Pretoria tomorrow. The five athletes, George Chakanetsa (light heavyweight), Innocent Muropa (bantamweight) and Brighton Taguta (lightweight) will take part in the series tournament which will be used to select athletes to compete at the All Africa Championships to be held in Harare on June 13.

Trymore Kamota will be taking part in the heavyweight category and Malvin Gwanzura completes the list of the travelling party and is set to fight it out in the middleweight category.

Zimbabwe Kickboxers’ Association (ZKA) president, Tony Kamangira expressed confidence that the athletes will do well at the Pretoria tournament.

“We have decided to send these experienced kickboxers because we want as much representation as possible when we play host to the All Africa Championships in June. This is the same team which did well during the last series held again in South Africa and I don’t see them failing to do us proud this time around,” he said.

Kamangira said after the All Africa Championships they would be looking forward to the World Championships to be held in Dubai.

However, the championships have been postponed indefinitely as the promoter of the tournament has fallen ill and a new date will be advised.

ZKA has also stepped up efforts to promote the sport in schools and some schools in Harare have since incorporated the sport into their curricula.

Kamangira said ZKA will soon decentralise kickboxing to include schools in Bulawayo, Midlands, Masvingo and Manicaland so as to nurture talent at an early age.
