HARARE City women’s volleyball team is close to secure a place in the knockout stages of the African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) Zone VI Club Volleyball Championships being held in Bulawayo.

The premier regional club championships are underway at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair Hall 3, with a total of 32 teams drawn from South Africa, Zambia, Lesotho, Malawi and Mozambique battling for the crown.

The women’s category saw the 12 women’s teams grouped in two pools of six, with the top four progressing to the quarter-finals.

Harare City top pool A with eight points from three games and with two more group games to play, they are certainly primed for a quarter-final birth.

They were in action yesterday and beat Botswana Defence Forces 6 3-0. Prior to the victory, they beat Kamplits from South Africa 3-2 before registering a 3-0 victory over city neighbours, University of Zimbabwe (UZ).

UZ also have a chance to progress to the next stage and just need to win their remaining two pool games. They are fifth with three points from three games.

In Pool B, Spartans and Support Unit are third and fourth respectively and will be hoping to hold firm onto the automatic qualification slots.

The men were placed into four groups, with two groups having four teams, while the other two have five teams.

UZ have been the most impressive and are second in Pool C with five points from two games and have been on a fine run. UZ beat Chalube from Zambia 3-2 before an impressive 3-0 victory over Unza also from Zambia.

Bulawayo’s only representatives at the games, Spartans, have had the going tough and are at the bottom of Pool B with two losses.

However, they are mathematically still in with a chance to qualify. Support Unit, who are in the same pool, are second with three points and have are eyeing the next round.

Winners of the tournament will represent the region at the continental championships.
