ONE person was injured when two commuter omnibuses collided head-on near the late Vice President Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo’s statue in Bulawayo yesterday morning.

One of the kombis overturned and several passengers escaped with bruises.

The statue site has become a black spot with numerous vehicles crashing into the balustrade.

Bulawayo’s Chief Fire Officer Richard Peterson said it was fortunate the accident was not fatal.

“We received a report about an accident that occurred at the intersection between Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Street and 8th Avenue. The call was received at 6:15AM. It involved two commuter omnibuses. One person was injured and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital. Others just sustained bruises,” said Peterson.

The government is yet to implement measures meant to reduce accidents around the area.

Last year in December, the government raised alarm over vehicles crashing into the statue saying there was a risk it could be knocked down.

Safety measures were supposed to be implemented by December 22 but to date nothing has been done.

Some of the suggested measures included putting lights, painting the perimeter of the statue and attaching reflectors and constructing speed humps.
