DEPUTY Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Dr Khuphukile Mlambo on Friday urged the Tsholotsho community to enroll more pupils at Landa J High School in Manqe area and work with the authorities to preserve the legacy of the late Vice President Landa John Nkomo.
Speaking during the first prize giving day at the school, Dr Mlambo implored the community to support the education of their children to curb perceived marginalisation and poverty.

“It’s important the community here works together with the Trust and the school authorities to make sure the late Vice President’s dream lives on and that his efforts don’t go to waste,” said Dr Mlambo.

The late VP Nkomo and national hero died in January 2013 barely a year after President Mugabe officially commissioned the school, which is installed with modern laboratory equipment, electricity, computers, standard furniture and classrooms.

The Deputy RBZ boss said economic challenges such as unemployment and the liquidity crunch should not be allowed to dampen development initiatives.

“Our problems can never be bigger than ourselves. No one can solve them. Even Obama can’t tell us the solutions to our economy, only us.

“As you know the government has come up with an economic blueprint called Zim-Asset to deal with our economic challenges,” he said.
The school head Fine Ndlovu accused parents of failing to support the education of their children and relying on donors for payment of school fees.

“Some of you parents aren’t concerned about taking children to school. You don’t even ask about their school work but give them household chores rather than giving them time to study,” he said.

The late VP’s son Jabulani said: “Our father would’ve done exactly what we’ve done. We feel proud that even the enrollment of the San community is increasing”.

The school is a brainchild of the late VP who was born and grew up in the Manqe area about 12km west of Tsholotsho growth point.
The school was established in 2005 with five teachers and less than 50 pupils.

Today enrolment has risen to over 318 with 28 teachers.
The event was attended by resident Provincial Magistrate for Tsholotsho Abednico Ndebele, parents, teachers, government officials and heads from different schools.
