and Field Championships, which are set for the University of Zimbabwe on Sunday.
The competition, one of the major meetings on the local calendar, was off the radar as organisers were weighed down by the financial challenges.
Most of the top clubs from around Zimbabwe are expected to send their athletes for the competition which would be used as pre-selection event.
The Harare Athletics’ Board secretary Silas Muringani has also invited schools and individuals to the competition.
“The event has been earmarked as one of the selection competitions for the African Junior Championships, All-Africa Games and World Youth Championship which are coming later in the year.
“So we expect all the top athletes from the established clubs to come for the meet.
“I think we should be having some exciting competitions because athletes have now peaked and will be battling for recognition.
“This is a platform for athletes to be selected for the international competitions.
“As HAB, we are also looking at our team for the National Youth Games set for Gwanda and the National Track and Field Championships in Torwood,” said Muringani.
LM Academy from Matabeleland South, coached by Zibusiso Nyoni, are expected to bring their trump card Thandiwe Nyathi for the senior women’s 3 000m race.
The Zimbabwe Prison Services, Black Rhinos and the Zimbabwe Republic Police are some of the uniformed forces clubs expected to take part.
But the most exciting duels could be in the men’s sprints featuring Tinashe Mutanga and Dumisani Bhebhe. Bhebhe was in blistering form at the National Secondary Schools Heads track and field championships in Bindura last month.
The Robert Lerumo Track and Field Championships were born in ’90s when a South African national, Robert Lerumo, made a visit to Zimbabwe and was impressed by what he saw and donated two trophies to the then Amateur Athletics Association of Zimbabwe.
