THE Zifa Southern Region LG Foods Super Cup final, overshadowed by the ongoing African Union Sports Council Region 5 Under-20 Youth Games has been set for next week.Zifa Southern Region Division One Soccer League’s runners-up Black Boots will square off in the final of the $12,000 sponsored tourney with Plumtree Chiefs.

Police force side Black Boots booked their place in the final after a 2-0 win over ZPC Hwange with Plumtree Chiefs storming into the last round of the tournament courtesy of a 2-1 away win at Hwange juniors.

Musa Mandaza, the Zifa Southern Region chairman said factors that have influenced the final to be a mid-week encounter were the ongoing Games which start tomorrow and end on December 15 as well as clubs’ pleas to release their players for off-season.

“It’s paramount to understand the clubs cries that of keeping players together when others are already resting. It becomes expensive for clubs to keep the players together when the season has ended. After our meeting, we saw it proper to squeeze the final during the week meaning it will be a mid-week game. We can’t wait for the Games to finish because that means another two weeks and that’s why we’ve decided to have it during the week and we will let you know the exact date,” said Mandaza.

Winners of the tournament will walk away with $2,000 with the losing finalists pocketing $1,500.

Losing semi-finalists will get $750 each and there are individual accolades for the Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper of the Tournament and the Top Goalscorer who will each get $200.

Both teams — Black Boots and Plumtree Chiefs are hoping to make up for their failure to land the championship won by Tsholotsho FC which would have guaranteed them a spot in the Premiership.

“Since this LG Foods Super Cup is the only silverware left to fight for, we’re training accordingly to make sure that we win this tournament. We worked hard this season and falling short of gaining Premiership status hurt us badly and we want to treat that disappointment by winning this trophy,” said Black Boots coach Kudzai Mutuda.

“It won’t be easy because Plumtree Chiefs just like us are also hungry for this cup glory but we will fight to the end,” Mutuda said.

Plumtree Chiefs assistant coach Anzilom Ndlovu said, “The zeal by our players gives us courage as coaches that the boys are really determined to make amends for missing the league championship by winning this cup. It’s going to be explosive.”
