TWO weeks ago I wrote about life as a journey.
Since writing that article, I have travelled a number of times and got a number of insights on life as a journey that I thought I could share with readers.
I really got confirmation that life is indeed a journey and I truly thanked God for the experiences provided, golden opportunities to reflect on what it means to be on a journey and how such experiences relate to life.
I realised that life is a package of joyful, depressing and fearful moments. There are times that we have to slow down or move with speed. There are times for caution and times to take risks. I also noted that there are times we walk alone and times that we have company.
It was a mixed bag of activities on the roads.
There were vehicles of all colours, models and sizes. Some of them so huge and threatening, the so-called “Gone yet/ Gonyeti” (haulage trucks).
There were people either going the same direction, opposite direction or even did not seem to be going anywhere. I could see broken down cars, slow moving vehicles, motorists being given speeding tickets and some just stopping to rest.
My depressing moment was an encounter with an accident that left two people dead.
This was a sad and sobering moment as I thought of the mothers of these two, who I concluded to be young men. (It was still early morning and dark, therefore I could not see clearly).
Life as a journey has real dangers that can either ground you or transform you.
I had to endure long trips alone most of the time. I must say the reality hit me hard that though there could be many people on the road, probably going the same destination, we all have different purposes.
Since we have different purposes we therefore experience life differently.
My experiences on my journey helped me to relate the physical journey and the main journey of life.
On my trips by road, I tried as much as possible to observe regulations governing the use of the road.
I must say painfully, I did so well on speed limits despite the fact that I was racing against time.
I was reminded of the many times in life that we have to go against our nature and do the right thing.
There are things in our life that are so enticing but not right. Like the mother of mankind, the Biblical Eve, we might be faced with things that are “pleasant to the eye and good for food”.
We therefore have to exercise a lot of restraint because the consequences are negative.
There were, however times I was slowed down on the road due to other road users.
I remember this time when I was faced with a big hurdle of having to deal with four to five heavy vehicles.
I had no choice but to be patient for a time until it was safe to overtake and go my way at my own speed. In life we get instances where we have to slow down or stop due to what surrounds us.
Patience is a virtue, but I must say it is never easy.
