THE local organising committee (Loc) for the Cosafa Women’s Championship to be held in Bulawayo next month gets down to serious business with a meeting this week set to be attended by the 23 heads of the various sub-committees.

Zifa vice-president Omega Sibanda chairs the Loc, with Piraishe Mabhena, a Zifa executive committee member, as the games’ general manager.

“We have a meeting this week in Bulawayo where we expect to have all 23 members of the sub-committees to be in attendance,” said Sibanda.

He said part of the agenda is to strategise on the working document and laying down of individual committees’ line of work and expectations.

The tournament will run from September 9-17 and all Cosafa member countries are expected to participate in a tournament that has been dominated by South Africa’s Banyana Banyana, who boast of three titles. The Mighty Warriors have lifted the title once on home soil in 2011, which was the last time the tournament was held.

The Mighty Warriors beat Banyana Banyana 1-0 in 2011 to lift the title in Harare. Banyana Banyana were seeking to lift the cup for the fourth time on the trot, but found a stubborn Mighty Warriors side backed by a vociferous home crowd.

Former Mighty Warriors star player Sithethelelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda was recently appointed head coach of the Mighty Warriors, having taken over from Rosemary Mugadza. She will be assisted by Paddington Chinyananya and former Hwange assistant coach Mebelo Njekwa, while legendary goalkeeper Peter Nkomo is the goalkeepers’ coach, with Tavaka Gumbo as technical advisor.

Starved of international football, the Bulawayo community will surely have an overdose of top notch women’s football action for two weeks, with matches at Barbourfields and Luveve stadiums respectively.
