LOSING Zanu-PF candidate for Hatfield Constituency, Acie Lumumba, yesterday appeared in court on allegations of assaulting a reveller at a Harare bar.Lumumba, 26, of number 16 Westminister corner Sixth Street and Kwame Nkrumah, appeared before Harare magistrate Nomsa Sabarauta facing assault charges.

Lumumba was remanded to September 11 on $100 bail. As part of his bail conditions, Lumumba was ordered to reside at the given address and not to interfere with state witnesses until the matter is finalised.

The complainant in the matter is Norman Bvikwa, 31.

Prosecuting, Shambadzeni Fungura alleged that on July 11 this year, Bvikwa was drinking beer at King Bar located at corner 6th Street and Kwame Nkrumah.

While enjoying himself inside the bar, Bvikwa was informed that his young brother was in a brawl with other people outside the bar, it is alleged.

The court heard that Bvikwa went outside to investigate but failed to locate his brother.

It is alleged that he decided to go back into the bar and on his way back he was approached by Lumumba who was in the company of three people.

Lumumba allegedly accused Bvikwa of being the colleague of the person who had caused trouble outside the bar.

He allegedly introduced himself before slapping Bvikwa. It is alleged that Lumumba’s accomplices joined in and started punching and kicking Bvikwa who sustained injuries and was rushed to hospital.

He dropped his cellphone at the scene and it was picked by one of the accused.

Lumumba was arrested on August 4 and the court is in possession of Bvikwa’s medical affidavit.
