Lovers’ gig at 7 Arts Theatre

And while the gigs to celebrate love are likely to start this Friday, celebrity couple Selma and Tendai Manatsa have a different idea.
The duo, together with Victor Kunonga and Alexio Kawara, have put together a gig for the actual Valentine’s Day, a Monday, at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare.

Dubbed the Couples Gig and running under the theme “I love you . . . you alone”, the show starts at 7pm and ends at 10pm.
Tendai’s father, Zexie Manatsa, a yesteryear hit-maker who, like his son, also worked alongside his wife, will be a guest artiste at the show.
Zexie, who obviously appeals more to a generation way past the thrills of Valentine’s, will join Tendai and Selma on stage for the momentous occasion.

“We hold this day (Valentine’s) dear to us because we are true to each other and we will be in a way celebrating our own love. In a way we will be using our own life as an example to all those that will attend the gig. We urge couples to come and enjoy themselves in a relaxed environment with more than three genres of music to sample from. 7 Arts is a wonderful venue where people watch artists perform in a concert set-up, we intend to keep it that way,” said Selma.

Selma and Tendai usually use a small five-piece band, but say this time around they have put together a full-strength ensemble for the Monday performance.
“Despite the fact that three bands will have to make do with just three hours, we are going to put on a five-star performance. We have added an extra guitar, mbira, percussion and backing vocalists to ensure we have full sound,” said Green Manatsa, the manager of Selma and Tendai’s band.

This show will be Alexio Kawara’s first visit to 7 Arts since he recorded his live DVD at the up-market venue late last year.
The artiste believes that their show with the Manatsas and Kunonga is the only one of its kind and will definitely be a success as the choice of the venue and the concept behind it are excellent.
“We could not have picked a better venue for such a concert. I have performed there and I know what it feels like when you are up there,” said Kawara.

The Shaina hit-maker, who is popular with the ladies, also declared that he would show everyone at that gig how much his act has improved.
“I have been working really hard over the last few months. As you know we recently resumed our shows at the Book Café and our act has improved tremendously and we are getting better by the day,” he said.
Kawara dismissed reports that his band was disintegrating, saying those who had left were just session musicians who left a long time ago.
“I have a full band that I do shows with. Those were just session musicians and left some time last year and were replaced without a hitch,” said Kawara.

The wward-winning afro-jazz crooner, who is riding high with his latest offering Handinete, his third studio album, also promised fireworks.
Kunonga, by far the most travelled and accomplished artiste of the lot, is expected to lead the way with several hits from his previous two albums Such is Life — Ndanyengetedzwa (2004) and Uyo (2006). It remains to be seen how Selma and Tendai, Kunonga and Kawara will fare come the big day, considering that their experiment falls on a normal working day.-The Sunday Mail
