FORMER Highlanders striker and Tsholotsho FC technical manager Joel Luphahla will be the guest of honour at the National Association of Primary Schools Heads (Naph) Matabeleland North inter-district track and field event set for Mavela Secondary School in Tsholotsho today and tomorrow.

The two-day event is being sponsored by Nestle Zimbabwe and stationery shop Zero Supplies.

The former speedy forward hails from the same district and his presence is meant to be an inspiration to local youngsters, most of whom have only heard of him.

“Luphahla will be our guest of honour as he also hails from Tsholotsho,” said Naph Matabeleland North chairman James Daka.

Other renowned sports personalities from Tsholotsho include Siza Khoza, coach Rahman Gumbo and long distance runner Brenda Banda.

Daka said all the seven districts in Matabeleland North confirmed their attendance. The districts are Hwange, Binga, Lupane, Nkayi, Bubi, Umguza and Tsholotsho.

According to Daka, vetting and the technical meeting were set to be held yesterday afternoon ahead of the kick-off of the competition this morning.

“There will be four age groups in the boys’ and girls’ categories, the Under-11s, Under-12s, Under 13s and Under 14s that will compete in the Nestle physical education event,” said Daka.

He said the Under-13s and Under-14s will compete in the 1,500M, among other races in the meet.

A provincial team will be selected at the end of the competition tomorrow to represent Matabeleland North in the national finals at Torwood Stadium in Redcliff.
