SUNGURA ace Alick Macheso stunned fans in Beitbridge on Sunday when he played his hit song Tafadzwa for the first time since the start of his divorce with Tafadzwa Mapako — his second wife.
The song Tafadzwa, which is off the Zvinoda Kutendwa album, is believed to have been composed for Mapako in 2011 at the height of their affair. Now that there is trouble in paradise, Macheso, who rarely skipped singing the song at his gigs, was now doing the opposite as he was no longer playing it — leaving fans to believe that he was emotionally attached to the song and was deliberately avoiding it.

He ran out of luck at Dulibadzimu Stadium as most fans who attended the show requested that he perform the song the moment he went on stage. Cheso Power, who is one of Zimbabwe’s top musicians, showed his experience in the music industry by separating personal issues from business and played the song for almost 30 minutes — as per revellers’ request.

In an interview after the show, Macheso said he performed Tafadzwa because he was not emotionally attached to the song.
“I played Tafadzwa just like any other song of mine. There is no emotional attachment to it. It’s a mere coincidence that when I met Tafadzwa, the song was already on the album.

“I want to assure my fans that whatever is happening in my private life will pass and that I will continue performing to the best of my abilities,” he said.
In the song, Macheso encourages Tafadzwa not to lose hope and to trust in the Lord.

It is both a song of encouragement as well as a prayer to God to bless Tafadzwa and fulfil her desires.
The musician paid tribute to his family and a legion of fans for their continued support in light of the marital issues he is currently facing. Macheso is battling a nasty divorce with Tafadzwa who is claiming at least $7,000 monthly maintenance for her needs and the upkeep of her two minor children.

The king of sungura added that fans should look forward to his new album which he hopes to release before the end of the year.
“I have taken long to release the album because I am busy building a studio at my house. Construction will be complete in the next four weeks.
“With issues of piracy on the rise in the country, I found it better to build my own studio and record the album there,” Macheso said.

He also commended the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Professor Jonathan Moyo for his interest in the development of music and arts in the country.
