FORMER Highlanders’ forwards Kudakwashe Mahachi and Knox Mutizwa were on target for their Absa Premiership side Golden Arrows as it speared AmaZulu 4-1 in a Durban derby on Sunday to go top of the league table with eight points.

Usuthu, home to two other Zimbabweans, Ovidy Karuru and Butholezwe Ncube, remained rooted on 13th position with just four points from the same number of games.

With the game dangerously poised at 2-1 in the 90th minute, Golden Arrows turned on the power and Mahachi scored the third goal in the second of the five minutes added on before Mutizwa put the final nail on AmaZulu’s coffin with virtually the last kick of the match.

Lerato Lamola and Siphelele Magubane scored Golden Arrows’ other two goals, while Karuru turned provider for his side’s consolation that was scored by Ouro-Akoriko.

According to the Timeslive website, despite a bright start for both sides, AmaZulu failed to create clear cut opportunities in front of goal in the first 10 minutes.

Both teams took their time settling into the game and it was Golden Arrows, who broke the deadlock just after 19 minutes through Lamola following a poor defensive error by AmaZulu.

Karuru delivered a cross to the far post, allowing Akoriko to make it 1-1 with a beautiful header just before half-time.

Arrows did not give their opponents a chance to breathe in the dying minutes of the second half as they put the game to bed.

“This was an entertaining match for both sets of supporters, with both teams attacking each other from the onset. Again we played with good intensity and our desire to get to our opponents’ box was very strong. Still, we were wasteful on the breaks and could have scored a few more goals with better decision making.

“A good home win and now we need to do it on the road as we have two away games in quick succession,” Arrows’ coach Clinton Larsen told the club’s official website.

His side is in action tonight against George Chigova’s Platinum Stars at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
