MAKOMO FC demonstrated their championship credentials when they prevailed 1-0 over third placed ZRP Hwange in a tense and fiercely contested encounter at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday. The result saw them stay in contention for the Zifa Matabeleland North Division Two league  title.

A spirited individual performance by the gangly player/coach Tapela Ngwenya inspired the coalminers who fought hard for the precious three points against the policemen who offered fierce resistance in a battle in which they deserved at least a point.

At the end of the memorable game, a Barnabas Madambu goal settled matters to leave Makomo still comfortable at the top with a four-point cushion over Amagagasi.

Second placed Amagagasi kept the fire burning when they romped to a 3-0 victory over whipping boys Hwange Under-17s at Chinotimba Stadium.

Marshal Alvera scored a double before an own goal by Andrew Tandi worsened matters for coach Never Munkuli.

At Sports Pavilion, home team Blackrock’s defensive frailties could have given coach Tichaona Mufandaedza a heart attack as the team lost 2-0 to Ingagula after conceding soft goals which Nation Ncube and Peter Hamisi gratefully tucked into the back of the net.

Later in the day at the same venue, Fire FC rubbed salt into the wounded soldiers’ wounds when they edged Moto Moto 3-2.

The servicemen, still smarting from a 7-1 drubbing by Victoria Falls Tigers a week earlier, found no respite as they were engulfed by the flames especially in the opening half when they trailed 3-0 courtesy of goals by Stewart Mwanza, Billy Kwabe and James Manda.

A second surge led Thabolwethu Dube only resulted in two bullets by Dube and Gift Sibanda being on target to reduce the deficit but not to pull the game out of the fire.

On Sunday, Kamandama Celtic and Victoria Falls Tigers shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw at Madumabisa Stadium with Previous Ndlovu scoring for the hosts while Quit Ndlovu scored for Tigers.

Iwisa travelled to Megawatt Stadium and came back empty handed after losing 2-0 to Baobab Rovers to leave all the three Lwendulu teams – Iwisa, Blackrock and Hwange Under-17s – with a miserable reflection of a weekend which they all lost and failed to score a single goal.

Rovers scored through Kudzai Madhume and Isaac Maphosa.

In a Victoria Falls derby, Classic Luyando continued with their classy performances when they edged Corinthians 2-1 to prove that their 1-0 victory over Amagagasi the previous week was no fluke.

Naboth Sibanda and Peter Mabhena scored for Luyando while Agreement Ncube was on target for Corinthians.

A resurgent Brazil were inactive as they were scheduled to play the expelled Broncos Africa.
