A Gweru man allegedly went berserk and stoned police officers who had come to arrest him for assaulting a soldier over a girlfriend.  Kudakwashe Sidube, 27, of Mkoba Village 14 teamed up with two of his friends who are at large in pelting the law officers. Sidube appeared before Gweru magistrate Vimbai Makora on Saturday facing charges of assault and obstructing the course of justice.

He was remanded in custody to Thursday for continuation of trial.
Prosecuting Blessing Neta told the court that on Thursday last week, around 9PM and at Mkoba Village 20 Shopping Centre, the complainant Denver Mthunzi, a soldier was sitting in his car with a woman only identified as Vena.

Neta said Sidube approached the two and started accusing the complainant of snatching his girlfriend.
He said a misunderstanding arose between the two and Sidube picked a log which was nearby and struck Mthunzi with it.
The court heard that the complainant fled and reported the attack to the police.

Moments later the complainant returned with two police officers and approached Sidube.
The court heard that Sidube ganged up with his two friends who are still at large and picked up some stones and started pelting the complainant together with the two officers. Neta said when the police officers and the complainant failed to contain the trio, they quickly sought refuge in nearby shops.

He said Sidube’s accomplices immediately vanished from the scene. Neta said Sidube escaped while his left hand was handcuffed.
He said with his one handcuffed, Sidube went to Club 20 beer hall which is at Mkoba Village 20 Shopping Centre. The court heard that one Amos Chiyambakare was at Club 20 when the accused forced his way into the bar. Neta said Sidube hit Chiyambakare with the handcuffs once on the forehead.

Sidube was arrested on the following morning by the police with the assistance of members of the public.
