A LOWER Gweru man bashed his friend to death with a log as they were coming from a night club, a court has heard.

Collen Moyo, 23, of Maboleni Township in Lower Gweru, appeared before Senior Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing a charge of murdering Washington Mpofu.

Chibanda did not ask Moyo to plead and remanded him in custody to September 16.

Prosecuting Owen Madhuveko told the court that on June 6 at around 12AM, at Mboma village under Headman Sikhombingo near Maboleni Secondary school, Moyo left Paradise Night club together with his friend. “Moyo and Mpofu were coming from Paradise Night Club at around midnight and they were going home in Maboleni Township. While on the way, near Maboleni Secondary School, Moyo and the now deceased had a misunderstanding over an unknown issue,” said Madhuveko.

Madhuveko told the court that that is when Moyo bashed Mpofu all over the body with a log, which resulted in the victim sustaining several deep cuts on the face and deep wounds all over his body.

The court heard that Mpofu died on the spot due to the excessive loss of blood.

“The search conducted by the police at Moyo’s residence led to the recovery of a blood stained jean trousers and shoes that Moyo was wearing on the alleged day. A log was also found at the scene and Moyo confessed to have used it to kill his friend,” said Madhuveko.

The court heard that Moyo was then arrested by the police.
