Man fatally assaults wife in fit of jealousy

Police yesterday identified the man as Francis Moyo (52) of Jibajiba Village under Chief Mabhikwa.

He allegedly killed his wife, Sitheni Ncube (49), on Saturday.

Sources said he had spent the day drinking beer with his wife at Jibajiba Business Centre.

Confirming the incident yesterday, police spokesperson for Matabeleland North Inspector Billie Dube, said Moyo was in police custody and would appear in court soon.

“Moyo and Ncube left the beerhall at about 7pm on the fateful day. They were in the company of Ms Evelyn Moyo (42). While on the way, Moyo is said to have seen his wife handing over an empty container to an unknown man,” said Insp Dube.

He said the action did not go down well with Moyo who immediately accused his wife of having an affair with the man.

“When they got home, a fuming Moyo took a knobkerrie and beat up his wife. He also used some logs to assault her all over the body. All the while, he demanded to know the identity of the man. He beat her up until she became unconscious,” said Insp Dube.

He said when Moyo realised that his wife had passed out, he rushed to the kitchen to fetch water in an attempt to revive her.

“However, when he returned with the water, he found her dead. He then informed other villagers who made a report at Lupane Police Station,” said Insp Dube.

“Police attended the scene and Moyo was arrested. Ncube’s body was taken to St Luke’s Hospital, en route to Bulawayo for a post-mortem.”

He encouraged couples to engage in dialogue whenever misunderstandings arose.

“If Moyo had simply asked his wife nicely who the man was, tragedy might have been avoided. Couples should respect each other and know that violence is never a way of ending differences that inevitably arise in marriage,” said Insp Dube.
