Matabeleland North provincial police spokesperson Inspector Billie Dube confirmed the incident, which happened on Boxing Day.

Insp Dube said Bafa Netha from Siphongweni Line under Chief Mathupula in Sipepa area had long been suspecting that his wife, Barbara Nkomo, had an extra marital affair with the village head, Mr Rueben Hadebe (53). “He allegedly hanged himself after suspecting that his wife was having an extra marital affair with their village head,” said Insp Dube.

“On the morning of 26 December, at about 6am, Netha went into his bedroom hut. His wife found the door locked when she wanted to enter.”

Insp Dube said Nkomo alerted his 29-year-old son, Jonas who went into the hut through the window. “The son got into the hut through a window and discovered that his father was hanging from the roof trusses. He unlocked the door and told his mother and they alerted other villagers,” said Insp Dube.

He said a report was made at Sipepa Police Station and police officers attended the scene.

“No foul play is suspected and a post-mortem was waived by a Tsholotsho magistrate,” said Insp Dube.

In a related incident, a 45-year-old woman from Lupane died when she threw herself into a 30-metre well on Christmas Day following a misunderstanding with her husband.

“We received a report whereby Christina Ncube who was the wife of Nicholas Moyo got angry after a domestic dispute with her husband on Christmas Day,” he said.

“It is alleged that during the misunderstanding, she stormed out of the bedroom hut and threw herself into a deep well.”

Insp Dube said Moyo alerted neighbours who helped him retrieve the body from the well.
