A MAN from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb has been arrested after he allegedly stabbed his father to death with a kitchen knife once on the stomach following a misunderstanding. Emmanuel Adam Phuthi, 30, allegedly stabbed Dingumuzi Innocent Phuthi, 53, on the right side of his stomach after he arrived home drunk on Sunday.

Emmanuel allegedly found the door locked at around 1AM. This angered him and he asked his father to open for him. The court heard that when Phuthi opened the door for his son, the two had a violent confrontation.

He said Emmanuel then allegedly grabbed his father violently and struggled with him before he stabbed him. Bhekimuzi, Emmanuel’s sibling tried to intervene to save his father but was allegedly pushed aside by his violent brother.

Emmanuel appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Themba Chimiso facing a murder charge.

Chimiso did not ask him to plead and remanded him in custody to May 19.

The murder suspect was advised by the magistrate to seek for consent from the prosecutor general to be granted bail.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza, told the court that on May 1, Emmanuel violently grabbed his father by the neck before he stabbed him.

“The accused violently grabbed the deceased by the neck and a struggle occurred. Bhekimuzi Phuthi, a son to the deceased then tried to restrain the fight but was pushed off by the accused. Accused then took a kitchen knife and stabbed the now deceased once on the right side of the stomach and died instantly,” said Mageza.

The prosecutor said a neighbour who was informed of the incident later reported the murder to the police.
