A BULAWAYO man has been arrested for allegedly attempting to rape a pregnant teenager.

The man’s brother dragged him off the screaming 19-year-old girl, whom he had attacked while he was urinating by a roadside.

Tinashe Mutambo, 33, of Tshabalala suburb in Bulawayo allegedly attempted to rape the girl on Sunday at around 5PM.

Western Commonage magistrate Sibongile Msipa Marondedze did not ask Mutambo to plead when he appeared before her to answer to a charge of attempted rape.

Msipa remanded Mutambo out of custody to August 13 and ordered that he be examined by two doctors in terms of the Mental Health Act. Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza said on Sunday at around 5PM, the victim was coming from Richards Shopping Centre in Sizinda where she had gone to buy vegetables. He said as she went past Mutambo, who was standing by the road, he suddenly started urinating.

“He grabbed the girl by her hair piece and dragged her away from the road. The teenager fell facing upwards,” said Mageza.

The court heard that Mutambo held the girl by the waist with one hand while attempting to remove her leggings with the other.

The teenager allegedly screamed for help as she struggled underneath Mutambo.

“His brother heard the noise and rushed to pull Mutambo off the girl.

The complainant sustained some stomach cramps due to the force used when Mutambo shoved her to the ground,” Mageza told the court.
