A MAN from Bulawayo’s Nkulumane suburb was left for dead after a stranger struck him with a shovel several times on the head following a misunderstanding, a court heard yesterday.

Lovemore Khumalo, 42, allegedly viciously attacked Ezekias Moyo, 28, of the same suburb on January 25 this year.

Moyo, the court heard, is still admitted in the Intensive Care Unit at Mpilo Central Hospital.

Khumalo appeared before Provincial magistrate Abednico Ndebele facing an attempted murder charge.

Ndebele did not ask him to plead and remanded him in custody to April 1.

The court heard that Khumalo struck Moyo on the head and neck after he tried to restrain him (Khumalo) from assaulting a woman who was not named in court.

Prosecuting, Mufaro Mageza told the court that on January 25 at around 6.45AM, Khumalo chased an unidentified woman and she ran and hid behind Moyo who was cultivating a field with a shovel.

“The accused person then forcibly took the shovel from Ezekias Moyo and struck him several times on the head. He collapsed and lost consciousness,” said Mageza.

The prosecutor said a passerby called an ambulance as Khumalo ran away. “The complainant suffered serious head injuries and is admitted at Mpilo Intensive Care Unit,” said the prosecutor.
