A-25-YEAR-OLD man from Lupane is on the run after allegedly striking a fellow villager with a log leading to his death about a week later.

Mandla Zulu (32) of Mkarabuli Village in Gomoza, under chief Mabhikwa died after he was repeatedly hit on the head by Washington Sibanda (25) of Holomoka Village in Gomoza, on August 21.

Zulu was admitted to hospital and discharged on August 24, only to die in his sleep at his home on Monday.

Matabeleland North provincial acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Eglon Nkala confirmed the incident.

“I’ve received a report on the death. At the moment investigations are underway,” he said.

Sibanda allegedly assaulted Zulu who was in the company of a friend, Mr Mbonisi Ncube (21) until he fell unconscious.

The murder suspect is alleged to have fled the scene after committing the crime.

Mr Ncube yesterday said Zulu was rushed to Gomoza Clinic soon after the assault and was later referred to St Lukes Hospital.

He was discharged from the hospital on August 24.

“The two got into a misunderstanding as we walked home from a beer drink at around 8PM. As we neared Washington’s home, the argument got heated and Washington grabbed a log and attacked Mandla. Mandla lost consciousness and fell to the ground,” he said.

Mr Ncube said villagers rushed his friend who was unconscious to Gomoza Clinic.

He said Sibanda has never been seen since committing the crime.

Chief Mabhikwa, under whose area the crime was committed, yesterday blamed the brewing and drinking of illicit beer for a rise in violent crimes.

“We have had a number of cases being reported after people drink these traditionally brewed beers. People should avoid arguments especially when under the influence of alcohol,” he said. — @winnie_masara
