WORLD Boxing Council (WBC) Silver champion Charles Manyuchi will fight in Zimbabwe for the first time when he defends his title against Frenchman Damie N Martin at the Harare International Conference Centre on September 30.

The announcement was made yesterday by Manyuchi’s Zambian handlers Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions (OQBP), represented by Chris Malunga and Mike Zulu, after meeting officials from the Ministry of Sport and Recreation in Harare.

Manyuchi’s bout will be the main event on a night that will have six fights involving boxers from the continent.

“It was agreed that the fight will be held in Harare and this historic event will be held in honour of His Excellency President Robert Mugabe in recognition of his contribution to the upliftment of African people in general and sporting fraternity in particular,” reads a statement released soon after a meeting of the two parties yesterday.

The boxing extravaganza will showcase the excellent collaborative links that exist between Zimbabwe and Zambia in the area of sport in general, particularly boxing.

“It will be recalled that the technical stable that has diligently nurtured Manyuchi is proudly Zambian whereas the boxing talent that resides in Manyuchi is proudly Zimbabwean,” reads the statement.

The event has already been sanctioned by the WBC, African Boxing Union and the relevant Zimbabwe authorities.

On a night of boxing fury, Lollita Muzeya will fight for the WBC welterweight title (woman) against Agnes Maukanena of Malawi in a bout scheduled for 10 rounds. Mbiya Nkanku of OQBP will take to the ring for the WBC super welterweight title against Mohammed Assoud of Tunisia in a 12-round fight.

Gibbon Kamota from the OQBP stable will take on Zimbabwean Tinashe Madziwana, Babra Banda from OQBP will take on Kudawasha Chiwandire before Alfred Muwowo, also from the Zambian promoters, takes to the ring against Zimbabwe’s Anyway Katunga. All the three fights are non-title bouts.
