CHARLES Manyuchi’s promoters Oriental Quarries Boxing Promoters were yesterday expected to meet the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board as they step up preparations for his title defence next month.

The World Boxing Council welterweight silver champion is currently training in Zambia for his voluntary defence fight scheduled for September 30 at the Harare International Conference Centre.

He beat Tanzania’s Deogratias Samwel in a non-title welterweight bout on Saturday in Lusaka, which was part of his build-up to next month’s fight.

Boxing Control Board member, Patrick Mkondiwa, said the promoters, led by his manager Chris Malunga, were expected in the country late yesterday for the meeting to map the way forward for the upcoming fight.

“We are expecting the promoters today (yesterday) to start their programme and marketing of the fight. We are meeting this evening when they arrive to come up with the logistics on how to market the programme.

“It’s just to kick-start the programme.

“We have a checklist, so we want to work on what we have to do, what we are starting with on the checklist.

“They may be here for quite some time. Tomorrow (today) we will have another meeting but for today we want to map the way forward,” said Mkondiwa.

Mkondiwa, who was in Zambia officiating in one of the fights on Saturday, was full of praise for Manyuchi following his victory in the non-title bout.

“His match in Zambia was good. He fought all the eight rounds and won by unanimous decision. He could have knocked him out early but I think it was their plan to finish all rounds because it helps him if he stretches through all rounds.

“He dominated all the rounds,” said Mkondiwa.

It’s the first time Manyuchi is going to fight at home having won his titles outside Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwean boxer has been on the rise since he became the WBC international welterweight champion in 2014 after beating Ghana’s Patrick Allotey in Zambia.

He successfully defended the title in November of the same year when he defeated Deivis Casseres in Zambia again.

Last year he retained his title against Gianluca Frezza in Italy.

In May he underlined his status as one of the best rising boxers on the African continent by beating Russia’s Dmitry Mikhaylenko to become the World Boxing Council welterweight silver champion.
