POLICE in Matabeleland North are hunting for a masked man who raped a woman living with disability near a charity home in Inyathi and escaped from the scene in a white vehicle.

Matabeleland North Province police spokesperson Sergeant Namatirai Mashona said the suspect who was driving a vehicle that is thought to be a Toyota Granvia, raped his victim, who is also mentally challenged, four times.

The woman whose name has been withheld to protect her identity, left a charity home where she lives unnoticed and that is when she met her attacker.

The suspect allegedly shoved her into his vehicle and drove to an unknown place where he raped her.

“We received a report of a rape where the complainant is hearing impaired and mentally challenged. The rape took place in Inyathi on November 25.

“The complainant was walking when an unknown man driving a white car which could be a Toyota Granvia and wearing a mask pulled off,” said the police provincial spokesperson.

Sgt Mashona said the suspect dragged the victim into his vehicle and drove to an unknown place.

“He raped her before driving back with her and dropped her at 11th Avenue Cooperative premises at Inyathi centre,” she said.

The woman reportedly spent the night outside as she couldn’t trace her way back to the charity home.

A Good Samaritan took her to Inyathi Police Station on Monday.

“The next day the complainant was brought to Inyathi Police Station by a village head who said he found her sleeping at the cooperative premises,” said Sgt Mashona.

Police referred her to the Social Welfare Department because her speech was incoherent hence communicating with her was a challenge.

“On November 28 she narrated her ordeal to Mrs Lungile Mlilo of Musasa Project in sign language and she accompanied her to file a report of rape,” Sgt Mashona said.

The victim was then referred to Inyathi District Hospital for medical examination. We are appealing to members of the public who may have information about the case to contact the nearest police station.”
