MASVINGO City Council is mulling setting up a disaster fund in the 2016 budget to assist victims of natural disasters and fire incidents.

The proposed fund will cater for people who would have lost their property during disasters and only Masvingo residents will benefit from it.

Masvingo Town Clerk Adolf Gusha said the fund, which would be considered in the forthcoming 2016 council budget, would go a long way in assisting stranded families confronted by different situations.

Gusha urged residents to insure their properties against unforeseen risks like fire outbreaks to mitigate the effects of such incidents. He said the local authourity would flight an advertisement in due course encouraging all property owners to have insurance cover.

“We’re considering coming up with a disaster fund meant to compensate families who would have lost property in disasters. We’re going to make those provisions for the fund in the 2016 budget whose consultations are set to begin soon,” said Gusha.

“The idea of a disaster fund was mooted years back after considering that there are many incidents of fire outbreaks in town which leave families’ properties and houses destroyed. We normally attend to these incidents.”

In 2013 and 2014, two families in the Hillside and Rhodene suburbs lost property worth several thousands of dollars, leaving them stranded their houses caught fire.
