MASVINGO United chairman and former Black Rhinos striker Special Matarirano has declared his interest in the chairmanship of the Zifa Eastern Region following the elevation of Piraishe Mabhena to the national board.

Matarirano, a serving Zimbabwe National Army officer, declared his intention to run for the region’s top post during the league’s Soccer Stars of the Year awards in Mutare on Saturday.

The awards ceremony was attended by the region’s board members, including Mabhena, who presented his final report and chaired his last board meeting. Matarirano said he wanted to change the face of the game in what is arguably the largest football region in the country.

“I have decided to announce my intention to bid for the chairmanship of the Eastern Region, which became vacant following the election of our former chairman Mabhena onto the national board,” said Matarirano.

“I believe I am ready to lead the region given my experience as a player with Black Rhinos in the Premier Soccer League as well as various administrative positions at club level in the country. Before I joined Masvingo United, I was an administrator at United Lions, which belongs to the army.

“One of the first things I will do if elected is to improve our brand presence by digitalising our communication systems. I intend to launch a website as well as introduce mobile-based communication and marketing strategies.”

He said he was in the process of putting together a campaign team to officially launch his campaign.
