MILLEN Matende and Chiedza Chikore were crowned the men’s and women’s champions of the Hope Fountain 30km race held in Bulawayo yesterday.

The Hope Fountain run returned after a two-year absence, with over 200 runners taking part in the race that started at the Centenary Park and finished at Hillside Dams.

Matende of Black Rhinos in Harare won the men’s run in one hour 57 minutes and 30 seconds, followed by Nkosiyazi Sibanda of Bulawayo, who clocked one hour 58 minutes and 34 seconds.

Chikore, who entered the race as an independent, won the women’s race in two hours 14 minutes and 56 seconds. Rutendo Mapindu of ZRP Harare was second in two hours 15 minutes and five seconds.

The women’s wheelchair race was won by Thandiwe Ndlovu of Richmond, who crossed the finishing line in two hours 26 minutes and 13 seconds followed by Zvishavane’s Ratidzo Tamu, who clocked two hours 58 minutes and 57 seconds.

The men’s wheelchair race was won by Elford Moyo in a time of one hour 39 minutes and 40 seconds. Closely behind was independent athlete Samson Muroyiwa, who finished in one hour 41 minutes and 47 seconds.

Cephas Pasipamire took the men’s veteran category in one hour 41 minutes followed by Elijah Mutandiro in one hour 53 minutes and 42 seconds.

The women’s veteran’s race was won by Saneliso Sibanda in three hours eight minutes and 37 minutes, with Sihle Khabi taking second place in three hours 34 second and 54 seconds.

Bulawayo Athletics Board chairman Manuel Mpofu said they were happy the Hope Fountain race was back and thanked all athletes that took part.

“Many thanks go to the Rotary Club of Belmont our partners in the promotion and development of athletics. We also thank them for their charity work in assisting the less privileged in society,” said Mpofu.

He said the race would return in 2018 bigger and better. — @innocentskizoe
