SCHOOL authorities and villagers from Matopo have expressed concern at the failure by Government to repair a bridge across Tuli River which was damaged by floods early this year.

In an interview, Matopo High school Deputy Head, Ms Silindile Ncube said the school tried to engage the local authority which only sent a team to assess the bridge.

“We once talked to the RDC and they sent a team but it was a private company. The company asked us to pay about $45 000 so it could repair the bridge despite the fact that this is public road. We cannot use school funds to repair a bridge or road as this is the responsibility of either central Government or council,” said Ms Ncube.

“We are afraid that if the rains start before the bridge is repaired, we will not be able to travel to Bulawayo and those from Bulawayo cannot visit the school.”

Ms Ncube said efforts to engage ZINARA did not yield positive results.

She said villagers had since built a makeshift bridge to enable traffic to pass through but this will not work once the rains start.

Efforts to contact Mzingwane Rural District Council were not successful.

Infrastructure worth about $100 million was destroyed during the floods that hit the country last rainy season.
