Dailes Bingadadi confirmed the development and said local athletes would on Sunday participate at a national competition in Harare.

“As a board we are in the dark about the Matopos 33 Miler and Nust 10km races as no one from the team organising the races has informed us on the progress with regards to preparations. We take that silence to mean that the races are off and I think our Bulawayo athletes will now compete at a race set for University of Zimbabwe on 6 May,” said Bingadadi.

The next major event for Bulawayo is the Old Mutual 10km race set for 17 June at Nkulumane Complex.

Last week White City Stadium played host to a successful Naaz track and field championship and at the weekend there was the Delta Beverages sponsored ZITF Coca-Cola Four-Minute-Mile competition.

Jacob Mugomeri of Rimuka Athletics Club went away with the $500 first prize money after crossing the line in four minutes 20,97 seconds.

Interestingly, Kadoma’s Mugomeri was the first athlete to qualify for the ZITF meet during trials that were held concurrently with the Mashonaland West Track and Field competitions in February.

His final time was better than that of Sparrows Athletics Club’s Trust Hove who won last year’s edition in four minutes 21,22 seconds.

Bingadadi was elated with the level of competition at the ZITF Coca-Cola Four-Minute Mile.
“It was a fast race and you could tell by the fact that all the top 10 athletes were within the qualifying time of four minutes 31 seconds.

“I think what made the athletes run faster was the sponsors pledge to give $2 000 to anyone who ran the race under four minutes or $1 000 for finishing in a time of four minutes five seconds,” Bingadadi said.

With Mugomeri having taken home $500, ZPS’ Kelvin Pangiso claimed $400 for being the first runner-up with Blessmore Chidziva pocketing $350 for coming third.
