BULAWAYO City Council has cancelled a tender to buy a $60,000 mayoral vehicle following an outcry by residents. Bulawayo municipality spokesperson Nesisa Mpofu yesterday confirmed that the tender had been cancelled but declined to give reasons for the cancellation. The latest development follows an outcry by residents after council flighted an advertisement over the weekend urging interested suppliers to place their bids to supply a Benz ML for the mayor.

Residents accused the city fathers of failing to prioritise service delivery at a time when council says it is broke and is struggling to pay its workers.

They said council could not spend such an amount on the mayor’s vehicle when it is failing to meet such critical financial obligations such as paying workers’ salaries and  funding basic services.

Bulawayo United Residents’ Association chairperson Winos Dube  has said  there is no justification to  buy the vehicle for such an amount when council is crying about cashflow challenges.

“Council cannot be allowed to continue buying expensive cars every year when service delivery is deteriorating,” he said.
