BEKEZELA, one of South Africa’s biggest Afro soul songs this year, will soon have a music video and Zimbabwe’s Mbo Mahocs will feature on it as Bekezela Nkomo, the man behind the hit’s love interest.

The music video shot recently in Johannesburg and Kwazulu Natal, will feature two of Bulawayo’s art exports in Mbo Mahocs and Bekezela who is a graduate of Amakhosi Performing Arts Academy.

A snippet of the video was released on social media last week and it got people in Zimbabwe giddy with anticipation as they saw two familiar faces on it. South Africans were also excited that they could finally watch what the song that has captured their hearts, was all about.

The song released this year on the debut album Bekezela has been given considerable airplay on South African radio stations and what was left was for the song to have a video.

Mbo Mahocs, who hosts a local lifestyle TV programme Thatha Wena, left the country last year and has been knocking on doors in South African showbiz ever since. It now seems as if she has got the breakthrough she needed.

The guitar strumming Bekezela, who is signed under the Mutherland stable that has the likes of Vusi Nova, Fiesta Black and Nathi, said the music video, a narration of a personal experience, would be released soon on YouTube and DStv music channels.

“The concept is built on a true story basis. We’ve a character of Bekezela’s girl (Beke) whose role is played by Mbo Mahocs. The video narrates the pain and anguish the two young lovers go through as they part ways, but are hopeful that they will meet again soon.

He said it was great working with Mbo Mahocs who he described as perfect for the role. “When casting for the girl, I wanted a real Zimbabwean girl with Zimbo features and ethics. So having known Mbo for a while now as a socialite and events hostess, she was the perfect fit. I called her and it was convenient that she works in South Africa now. She responded with great zeal and eagerness to work with me,” said Bekezela.

Mbo Mahocs said she was grateful that the stars seem to be lining up in her SA fledgling showbiz career.

“Well, the music video isn’t about me. Bekezela deserves all the credit; it’s taken him so long to finally be recognised. It’s not easy being in a country where nobody knows you and crack it. I can relate to his journey.

“I’m just honoured Bekezela asked me to feature. It’s amazing to work with people that respect and support your craft. It’s humbling, iron sharpens iron,” said Mbo Mahocs.
