ALL is now set for the MDC-T’s elective congress that starts today, with major highlights being the battle between the opposition party’s secretary for information and publicity, Douglas Mwonzora and organising secretary, Nelson Chamisa for the post of secretary general.

This followed Mwonzora’s refusal to settle for a lesser post as he was now gunning for the bigger one to replace Tendai Biti who has since formed the MDC Renewal Team.

Elections of new leadership is expected tomorrow where Mwonzora and Chamisa will fight it out to land the post of secretary general.

Mwonzora confirmed last night that all was in place for the congress as delegates had started arriving for the event set for the City Sports Centre in Harare.

He said former Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions secretary general Wellington Chibebe would be guest of honour, while MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai would deliver the keynote address.

“There will be an opening speech by Chibebe,” said Mwonzora. “Thereafter, we will go into a plenary session where we will receive reports from the president, secretary general, national chairman and other portfolio heads.”

Mwonzora said he would square off against Chamisa for the post of secretary general.

The MDC-T was forced to hold its forth congress early after a second split spearheaded by senior officials who asked party leader Morgan Tsvangirai to step down following his humiliating defeat at the hands of President Mugabe and Zanu-PF in the July 31, 2013 harmonised elections.

Party secretary general Tendai Biti and national deputy treasurer Elton Mangoma led a group calling themselves Renewal Team and petitioned Tsvangirai to step down, creating animosity which led to the split of the party.

Mudslinging and backbiting characterised events leading to the MDC-T congress, with Tsvangirai complaining that some candidates were moving around claiming they were his preferred candidates.
