THE Midlands Pool League (MPL) will today hold its awards presentation ceremony where it will unveil a sponsor to bankroll the league this year. A pre-season tournament which will precede the awards ceremony and will be the curtain raiser to the new season which is expected to begin on the first week of February, looks guranteed.

MPL chairman, Vandirai Hove confirmed the developments and said about 40 clubs are expected at the pre-season tournament.

“We’re going to be holding our awards ceremony tomorrow where we’ll be honouring the league champions as well as those in Division One. We’ll take the opportunity to unveil our sponsors.

“The presentation ceremony will be followed by a tournament where 40 clubs have already confirmed participation and we’re working on the prizemoney,” he said.

Senga were crowned champions last year while MN Gunners were the runners-up with MSU coming a close third while in Division One, Mainstreet, ZRP Gweru and All Four Stars will be promoted into the Premiership after coming first, second and third respectively. The three clubs will also be honoured at the ceremony.

Turning to the new season, Hove said the league is working on modalities to reduce the number of teams in the two leagues to make them more competitive.

“We want to make the leagues more competitive and we’re looking at ways of reducing the number of clubs. We’ll look at teams which have the capacity because last season we had problems with teams which were failing to fulfil their away fixtures and this compromised the competitiveness of the league.
