“The Youth League is mandated by the constitution of Zanu-PF which requires the Youth League to mobilise the youth in support of political, social and economic activities in the country. So having this One Million Man March is part of our political mobilisation which we are doing in the youth as mandated by our party constitution.

So there is nothing unique about it. It is one of our responsibilities as the youth leadership to mobilise our youth to have full participation in the political activities in the country. The other aspect is we as youth intend to reaffirm our support for our President, Cde R.G. Mugabe. You know there is a lot of negative publicity which is spread by the Western and private media about our party to an extent that our grassroots supporters are now confused about the goings on in the party. So we also take this march as an item which will strengthen and restore confidence in our grassroots support.” – Cde Kudzi Chipanga Zanu-PF Youth League Deputy Secretary

“We congratulate the youths for the initiative to demonstrate in celebration of President Mugabe’s success as leader of the country since 1980 and as an African icon. From the party’s point of view, the march was never said to be against any leader in the party but in solidarity with the President and First Secretary of Zanu-PF for his quality leadership. Certainly the party cannot fail to support such a noble cause…Zanu-PF is for total unity in the party and no amount of divisive efforts from any quarter will succeed. Our party’s motto is ‘Unity, Peace and Development’ and we live by it.” – Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, Zanu-PF national spokesperson.

“I know there has been a lot of talk regarding the march, its organisation and purpose, but we as leadership have said comrades must come. The march is not in support of any particular group or in the interest of any group, but is it for the President and him being our patron and Commander-in-chief, we are obliged to come and support. We are not only supporting, but taking leadership and giving direction on how it should be done. When I say direction, I am talking about war veterans being elders, the youths are our children and yes, they could have positions, but they remain our children. As parents we will not necessarily lead, but advise.” – Cde Victor Matemadanda, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association secretary general

“Zanu-PF is the oldest political party in the country and is the ruling party and the march is going to strengthen it. In French, there is a saying that ‘If you do not take care of politics, politics will take care of you.’ This march means Zanu-PF is still mobilising people and is still the people’s party…

“This march is very important because now that there is political freedom, many youths today do not understand why they are facing economic challenges. The Zimbabweans youths have mastered that ‘Seek political independence first and economic freedom later’ is the pillar in which nations are founded and built.” –

Mwawapanga Mwanananga, Dean of African diplomats and Ambassador of the Democratic Republic of Congo to Zimbabwe.
