Miners’ federation sets 2017 production target

BLANKET MINE

THE Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) says it is working on reaching its gold production target of 10 tonnes this year.

Last year the Government set 10 tonnes as the target for small scale miners while that of big corporates was 14 tonnes.

ZMF public relations officer Mr Dosman Mangisi yesterday said the miners would first have to reach the target set for them before it can be reviewed.

“Our gold production target for this year still stands at 24 tonnes for all miners because we didn’t   reach it last year,” said Mr Mangisi.

“We had a shortfall of 2,6 tonnes, meaning we produced only 21, 4 tonnes.”

The sector blames widespread claim disputes, lack of appropriate equipment, access to capital and skills as major challenges faced last year.

The prevailing cash challenge also had a negative impact on gold production as miners were reluctant to operate at full capacity due to the inability to access cash after production. Last year, the Government took over 5 267 mining claims in Matabeleland North and South provinces over non-remittance of taxes..
