MDC secretary-general Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga has resigned as the rift between her and her boss Professor Welshman Ncube widens. The stepping down of Misihairabwi-Mushonga has been attributed to her fall out with Prof Ncube, the party president, over positions in the proposed new party to be formed when MDC and the MDC Renewal Team merge.

Since the fallout, Misihairabwi-Mushonga has received insults on her Facebook wall from the party youths led by secretary-general Discent Collins Bhajila.

Party deputy president Edwin Mushoriwa yesterday confirmed Misihairabwi-Mushonga’s resignation reminding the public that the former SG had announced through the media last month that she would be making a decision on her role in the party.

Mushoriwa, who has not been on the spotlight for a long time, said Misihairabwi-Mushonga tendered her resignation to Ncube last Thursday.

“The presidency has accepted this resignation and hopes that Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga will continue in her other roles in which she was deployed by the party, such as her role in Parliament,” said Mushoriwa.

“On behalf of the leadership and membership of the party, we sincerely thank Hon Misihairabwi-Mushonga for the outstanding and committed service that she rendered to the party in her capacity as secretary general since her election to that position in February 2011.”

Sources within the MDC told The Chronicle that Ncube and Misihairabwi-Mushonga had fallen out over allegations that the secretary-general was backing Tendai Biti, leader of the Renewal Team, to lead the united party ahead of Ncube.

Misihairabwi Mushonga, it is claimed, is doing this to secure herself the post of secretary-general in the united party. An agreement signed between the two parties states that the posts of president and secretary general will be split ensuring that if the MDC Renewal candidate wins the presidency, the secretary-general will come from the MDC and vice versa.

Prof Ncube last month dismissed reports of a rift between himself and Misihairabwi-Mushonga, insisting any member was free to back a candidate of his or her choice when the parties unite.

However, party sources yesterday said Misihairabwi-Mushonga was not happy with allegations that she had sold out by not supporting Ncube.

“There is also feeling that the fall out with Ncube exposed Misihairabwi-Mushonga to attacks by Bhajila and others. Ncube has not lifted a finger on the attacks on Misihairabwi-Mushonga leading to suspicion that the youths have his backing,” said a source.

There were reports that Matabeleland South Province under which Misihairabwi-Mushonga was elected MP under the proportional representation, was pushing for her ouster. However, the party was quick to deny the reports saying it had no intentions of firing her.
