Johannesburg – An ecstatic Ntandoyenkosi Kunene was crowned Miss South Africa at a glitzy ceremony held at Carnival City in Johannesburg on Saturday. Tayla Skye Robinson, who walked away as the winner in the swimsuit section was crowned second princess and landed a magazine cover as well as a cash prize. Kunene, a 23-year-old education honours student from Mpumalanga, said she was determined to make a difference during her reign.

She said: “As a little girl growing up in the township — modelling around the house and practising my speech in front of the mirror – I had always hoped, prayed and believed that one day my name would be called as the new Miss South Africa.”

“I’m so excited! I don’t know what to do with myself right now,” she said.

The new Miss South Africa said she is delighted because she has the opportunity to give back to her nation. For the first time, there were two elimination rounds in the competition. The first round eliminated four contestants, bringing the contenders down to 8. The second round saw the top 8 reduced to the top 5.
