ZIMBABWEANS are today celebrating two holidays, Zimbabwe’s 34th birthday and Easter.  While various night spots will be taking advantage of the double dose of holidays, churches have also lined up services and conferences to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.People will be celebrating 34 years of self-rule while some go to church to mark the day Jesus was crucified for their sins.

Local artistes on the other hand will be busy chasing the dollar performing at gigs while others will be with their families.

Afro-jazz musician Jeys Marabini said celebrating Independence Day was very important as it was a time to reflect on the history of Zimbabwe as he always answers the call to perform at independence galas.

He said he had no gigs lined up during the long weekend but would spend it with his family and at church.

“I will spend my day on the road. Easter is when we thank God for sending his son Jesus to die for us sinners. Whichever church one attends this day is very important to us as Christians. I will be with my family and we will attend special Easter sermons at the Brethren in Christ church,” said Jeys.

As a Traffic Safety Ambassador, the musician also advised motorists to drive safely during the holiday.

“I urge motorists to drive safely during the holidays. They should desist from using cellphones when they are driving and not drink and drive,” he said.

His counterpart in the traffic safety campaign, Sandra Ndebele said motorists should exercise extreme caution on the roads and reduce road carnage to zero this holiday.

Comedian Clive Chigubu said he was looking forward to the holiday as it would give him time to prepare for the Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) where he was billed to perform.

Chigubu said independence was important because it reminded the youth of the liberation struggle that brought the country independence.

“We tend to forget where we came from and remembering independence is very important for us as youths so that we continue the struggle of self-actualisation. I will be at home working hard on my upcoming show during that time,” he said.

Imbube group, Impumelelo Shining Stars said they would be making a beeline to their various churches to meet up with other congregants to celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Thembelani Ndlovu, one of the group members, said they would not be on holiday as they had performances lined up at local churches.

“We have a show at Abundant Life Church in the city on Saturday,” he said.

Socialite, Mbonisi Mahonondo, better known as Mbo Mahocs, said she would spend the Easter holiday in her rural area of Tsholotsho. She said the reason she was going to the rural areas was to eat natural foods such as maize, sweet reeds and melons.

“I want to herd cattle and goats there. I also miss eating maize, melons and sweet reeds. I will go to church when I come back from the rural areas,” said Mbo Mahocs.

She said although some in the Christian faith remembered to fast towards the Easter holiday she had forgotten to do so.
