VICTORIA Falls-based afro-fusion group Mokoomba is making waves in Canada where they are on tour of that country. The sextet from Chinotimba Township performed in front of a sold out Gallager Park in Alberta on Thursday at the four-day Edmonton Folk Festival ending tomorrow.
Those that attended the show could not help but share pictures of the group’s ecstatic performance.

The pictures were accompanied by comments which described the group’s performance as electrifying, fantastic, awesome and energetic. A local media house, the Edmonton Journal profiled the group in Canada and spoke to Abundance Mutori who said:

“It’s a pretty big experience for us coming to a new continent and a whole new audience. It’s been great to see how people enjoy our music.”
Here are some of the comments from Twitter on the group’s performance:

Richard Feehan þ@FeehanRichard: Excellent music from Mokoomba at #efmf2014.

alison þ@alisonborealis: Mokoomba are energetic and fantastic. I’ve quite enjoyed their set. So danceable, and lively. Multilingual musicians always amaze me. #efmf

Sheena!! Millar þ@Arbitral: Mokoomba was fantastic. For about twenty minutes, I almost believed I had rhythm. #efmf2014 #yeg.

Tanya Corbin @TanyaCorbinEdm: The singer for Mokoomba has a voice like the great Baaba Maal. One of my all time faves. #efmf1014
The name Mokoomba is a reference to the vibrant life and spiritual power of the Zambezi River, which passes through Victoria Falls town, a metaphor of sorts for the varied streams of musical sounds that come together in the band.

The group comprises Mathias Muzaza: lead vocals, backing vocals and percussions, Trustworth Samende: electric, nylon, mute guitars and backing vocals, Mutori: bass and backing vocals, Donald Moyo: keyboards, Miti Mugande: percussions and backing vocals and Ndaba Coster Moyo: drums, backing vocals and beat box.
