ONE of Bulawayo’s thrilling new productions, Mothers, which received rave reviews after its premiere in April, will be taken to the rest of the country next week.
Mothers — a two-woman play featuring renowned actress Sarah Mpofu-Sibanda and Musa Sibanda, will be showcased at various universities in the country during the four-day tour.

Play director, Thembi Ngwabi, said the 30-minute production, which tackles issues of abuse against women, tells the story of Mira, a woman who gets caught up by her past when her husband impregnates their daughter, Bella, out of revenge.

“The truth unfolds as Bella tries to tell her mother that she is pregnant when, in fact, the mother has a bigger surprise in store. The play is full of unexpected twists and suspense which puts the audience at the edge of their seats.

“The play celebrates women and the important role they play in society. It has an alluring and unique set that immediately captures the audience’s attention even before it starts,” Ngwabi said.

She said the play would be shown at the Midlands State University in Gweru next week.
“Our first stop will be the Midlands State University where we are not only expecting theatre and drama students to watch the play, but we are inviting everyone as the play tackles various social issues which affect everyone,” said Ngwabi.

She added that their next stop would be in Masvingo at the Great Zimbabwe University on August 28 before travelling to Mutare to Africa University the following day. The tour will end in Harare on August 30.

Ngwabi said after the national tour, the play would be showcased at the Intwasa Festival koBulawayo which runs from August 23 to 27.
The play has been valued by many who have watched it, especially other women in the theatre industry as it is an inspiration to them.
The play was produced courtesy of the Women in Theatre (WiT) – a Nhimbe Trust programme run by women for women in a bid to promote visibility and increase opportunities for women in theatre circles.

The WiT project has so far showcased two productions, Song of a Woman and Mothers.
