LACK of sponsorship has led to cancellation of the World Boxing Federation African heavyweight champion Elvis “Bulawayo Bomber” Moyo’s title fight against Zambia’s Joseph Chingangu.
Moyo was set to trade leather with Chingangu in Lusaka on September 20.
Having been barred from boxing in South Africa because of his involvement in the Extreme Fighting Championships (EFC) Africa mixed martial arts, Moyo was hoping to defend his title in Zambia.

In a telephone interview from Johannesburg yesterday, Moyo who last fought in November last year expressed his disappointment over the cancellation.

“I was really looking forward to sending Chingangu to retirement with just two rounds. Unfortunately, the guys from Zambia who were organising the fight have informed us that they failed to get funding for the bill. I have been training hard and even turned down an offer to fight in Saturday’s EFC Africa bout in Durban because I wanted to get ready for the Zambia fight.

“As things stand, I don’t think I will be able to get a boxing opponent outside South Africa before the end of the year,” said Moyo.
The former Tshaka Youth Centre pugilist is now focusing on a cage fight set for Cape Town in November.

According to BoxRec.Com, Moyo has fought 11 times winning four bouts against Kali Kalembe and Stephen Castle at Emperors Palace in 2011. His third victory was against Justice Silinga in 2012 and last year in November he pummeled Machimana in a title fight.

The “Bulawayo Bomber” has lost five times to Danie Venter, Joseph Chingangu, Flo Simba and Ilunga Makaba who knocked him out twice in 2008 and 2010.

Moyo’s draws were against Machimana at the beginning of last year and Jonny Muller in 2010.
However, the Bulawayo Bomber remains confident of fighting in America or Europe.

“There is a guy by the name Billy Painter who called me from America last week and wants to organise something for me in the US or Europe. He runs a mixed martial arts radio station and if all things go well I might get an opportunity to fight outside Africa. I’m just keeping my fingers crossed but I will continue training for my cage fights,” said Moyo.
