A MPILO Central Hospital doctor who was arrested on Tuesday after he allegedly pummelled a nurse with a log, causing her death days later, has appeared in court charged with murder.

Alexander Ndlovu, 28, of Mpilo Central Hospital Doctors’ Quarters on Thursday appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Tinashe Tashaya facing a murder charge in connection with the death of Tecla Sibanda, 27, of Mzilikazi suburb. Sibanda was working at a local private surgery operated by Mpilo Central Hospital clinical director Dr Solwayo Ngwenya.

Ndlovu was remanded in custody to October 14 pending application for bail at the High Court.

Ndlovu is said to have flown into a rage two weeks ago and violently assaulted Sibanda whom he accused of pimping his wife to other men. She died in her sleep early Tuesday this week, allegedly from injuries sustained during the assault.

Prosecuting, Taurai Hondoyemoto said on September 20 this year, Ndlovu had an altercation with Sibanda over a rumour which the doctor claimed was being spread by her. Details of the alleged rumour were not disclosed in court.

The court heard that Ndlovu took a log and indiscriminately attacked Sibanda all over her body while they were at Mpilo Central Hospital Doctors’ Quarters.

The nurse was rushed to hospital where she was admitted, but died on Tuesday allegedly due to the injuries she sustained.

The doctor was arrested following the nurse’s death.

Earlier this week, Sibanda’s family told The Chronicle that the nurse died in her sleep. The family believes her death was linked to the alleged brutal assault at the hands of Ndlovu.
