VARSITY outfit, MSU closed in on leaders Whawha following a 2-1 win over city rivals Gweru City in a Zifa Central Soccer League encounter played at the University Grounds.
Goals by Nyasha Semende and Tawanda Pikiri ensured that the Varsity Sharks, as MSU are  affectionately known, collected maximum points while City got a face saver from Willie Juwakinyu.

The university side capitalised on a slip by Whawha who were held to a goalless draw by Chrome Stars. Whawha have so far dropped seven points in their last six encounters since the second half of the season began as compared to just six points they dropped in the first 13 matches.

After the weekend round of matches the correctional services side and MSU are now tied on 39 points from 19 games with Whawha occupying pole position by virtue of a superior goal difference.

MSU mentor Godfrey Chuchu believes his side is now better placed to wrestle the championship from Whawha.
“We are taking each game as it comes and we will concentrate on our game and not worry ourselves with how other teams are performing. If we can continue with the fine form then I do not see what stops us from landing the championship which will guarantee us promotion,” he said.

In other matches, Vumbachikwe ran riot at Pelandaba Stadium as they massacred the league’s whipping boys Nkayi United 4-0. However, the result did little to change their position on the standings as they are still perched on 10th position.

Another Gwanda outfit, Blanket Mine was also in an uncompromising mood after demolishing Gaths Mine 3-0 in their own backyard.
Results:  Chrome Stars 0-0 Whawha, MSU 2-1 Gweru City, Vumbachikwe 4-0 Nkayi United, ZRP Beitbridge 3-0 Chomumvuri Pirates, Tongogara 1-0 Silo United, Gaths Mine 0-3 Blanket Mine, FC Platinum U-19 3-0 Zvishavane Stars
