MIDLANDS State University (MSU) has spent approximately $1,1 million so far on the construction of a state-of-the-art chapel which has a seating capacity of 1 700 people.

The university’s public relations director Mrs Mirirai Mawere said yesterday the chapel is now 95 percent complete.

“The chapel is not yet complete, only left with final touches. We are working on completing the roofing, furnishing and painting. There is still some work to be done before commissioning it,” she said.

Mrs Mawere said the chapel is an interdenominational one which will be used to carry out all university church services.

“We will be using the chapel to conduct church services such as beginning and closing of the semester services, mid-week and memorial services for all university faith-based functions such as gospel concerts, conferences, Christian union functions. It can also be hired out to faith-based organisations for their national conferences,” she said.

An impeccable source within the university’s Accounts Department said the institution of higher learning has so far disbursed $1,1 million from its coffers for the construction of the chapel.

“At the moment the university has injected an approximate of $ 1,1 million for the construction of the chapel, while the remaining phase might require about $100 000 before its commissioning,” said the source.

The source said initially the institution had opted to tender for the construction of the chapel but private constructors projected the total cost at about $ 6 million.

“This was a bold step taken by the university authorities as they have managed to save millions of dollars as the institution is itself constructing the university,” said the source.

The project has come as a relief to thousands of students at the institution.

Most of them have been using lecture rooms for their prayer sessions as well as other church programmes.
