EMAKHANDENI’S Mtshingwe Primary School won the third edition of the Baines Junior Dumisani Mankunzini Winter Cricket Festival after beating the hosts by two wickets in the final on Saturday.Mtshingwe, participating for the first time in the competition, managed to surpass the 99 runs target set by Baines in the final and hit 100 to win the match by two wickets.

Mtshingwe, Baines, McKeurtan, Kumalo, Induba, Imbizo, Milton, Mpumelelo and Gampu primary schools made it to the finals and were drawn into three groups with the top teams as well as the best runners-up making it through to the next stage.

Magwegwe, Tennyson and Nkulumane failed to turn up for the games.

“It was a great tournament and the kids really had fun. What was clear is that there is abundant talent at grassroots which needs to be nurtured. I was happy with the turnout and to see Mtshingwe winning in their first year shows that they are a quality side. The final against Baines was good and they won on the last ball.

“We are grateful to everyone who contributed to the success of this competition and we are looking forward to a bigger event next year,” said Dumisani Mankunzini.

On their way to the final, Mtshingwe who were Group B winners, chasing a target of 80 runs easily won by eight wickets against McKeurtan in the semi-finals while Baines edged Milton by five runs in the other last four game.

For coming first, Mtshingwe took home a trophy and a playing kit with Baines getting a playing kit for being losing finalists.

There were individual prizes for excelling cricketers which saw Shalom Moyo of Baines getting the Player of the Tournament accolade for his all-round performance and got a bat, batting bat, batting pads and batting gloves.

Tendai Takavengwa who took 12 wickets won a new cricket ball for being the Bowler of the Tournament while Mtshingwe’s Stanislaus Ngirazi got the wicketkeeper award for 10 dismissals and got wicketkeeping gloves.

Themba Moyo of Baines was voted as the Most Promising Player while Lungile Nyathi who hit 80 runs of Mtshingwe got the Batsman of the Tournament accolade which was accompanied by a bat and batting gloves.
