REGISTRAR-GENERAL Tobaiwa Mudede has warned Zimbabwean women against involving themselves in marriages of convenience with foreigners. Mudede said foreigners, mainly Asians from Bangladesh were on the prowl, preying on unsuspecting local women. “There some foreigners particularly Asians who masquerade as Zimbabweans while holding fraudulently acquired Zimbabwean documents. We have been having problems with people from Bangladesh. Some of them contract marriages with local women. Others go as far as contracting customary marriages,” he said.

Mudede advised members of the public intending to marry foreigners to first check to ensure that they have been cleared.
“Members of the public are advised to liaise with our registration offices to thoroughly scrutinise documents of all foreigners who are intending to marry Zimbabwean women,” he said.

Mudede said the public should ensure that foreigners were cleared by the Immigration Department, the police, and their embassies before entering into such marriages.

He urged marriage officers to be on the lookout when dealing with foreigners intending to get married.
Mudede also called on traditional leaders to be wary of such people.

“We are calling for chiefs and village heads to be extremely vigilant within their areas of any couple intending to get married in their areas of jurisdiction,” said Mudede.
