Chapungu 2 – 2 How Mine
CHAPUNGU fans were left cursing their coach John Nyikadzino after his charges allowed How Mine to come back into the game in the second half and snatch a late goal to force a 2-2- draw in an exciting match at Ascot stadium yesterday.

Agrippa Peperere put Chapungu ahead in the 13th minute, heading in a flick from Allen Tavarwisa but the airmen gave How Mine a lifeline in the second half owing to some substitutions which swayed the match in the visitors’ favour.

The fans were incensed by the withdrawal of lively winger Xolani Ncube for Philip Marufu and the introduction of Maxwell Mavuto for Jameson Mukombwe. The fans felt Ncube had kept How Mine’s backline especially rightback Praise Tonha on his toes restricting them from venturing forward.

Nyikadzino admitted the fans were justified in getting angry.

“After the win away to Border Strikers, the fans felt that it was time to win at home. We played well in the first half but we allowed them to come back at us in the second half. We should have defended our lead,” said Nyikadzino.

Despite the sad ending, Chapungu exhibited their best show at home so far this season with Patrick Khumbula getting the first chance in the 7th minute when he escaped the attention of a number of How Mine defenders but his shot was parried back into play by goalkeeper Donovan.

With action swinging from one end to the other, Chapungu goalkeeper Roy Mazingi was called into action three minutes later to deny Godfrey Nguwodzawo who was released by Charles Sibanda.

However, it was Chapungu who went ahead on the 13th minute mark. They won a corner kick on the right and Charles Mativenga’s cross was flicked by Tavarwisa towards Peperere who turned it past Donovan. The visitors refused to be cowed into submission as they equalised three minutes later with Pasca Manhanga tapping in a rebound after Mazingi parried a Tonha free kick from just outside the box.

Captain Tapuwa Khumbuyani was to rescue his team when he cleared off the line a header from Tavarwisa with Donovan beaten in the 35th minute. But there was no denying Tavarwisa a minute later when he shook the roof of the net with a rising shot off a nice delivery from Mukombwe on the right.

There was little goal mouth action in the second half with chances becoming few as Chapungu’s attack receded allowing How Mine to control the match towards the end. Substitute Kuda Musharu got the equaliser five minutes from time when he headed in a cross from Tonha on the right.

How Mine coach Kelvin Kaindu felt his team should have won the match as they let in soft goals.

“We should have won this game, but we allowed them to score soft goals. We didn’t play well in the first half. We need to work on our defence because we continue to let in soft goals,” said Kaindu.

All the five meetings between Chapungu and How Mine have ended in stalemates.
